Champions League

The Champions league is the new version of the European Cup and has had that name since 1992. It is perhaps the premier football tournament in the world due to having the best teams from the European leagues compete to determine the best in Europe. The only country in the European Union that is not eligible to enter a team is Lichtenstein, which has no national football league of its own. The league is much more prestigious than the UEFA Cup and the now abandoned Cup Winners Cup, due to the elite nature of the competition. AC Milan are the current holders of the Cup since they beat Liverpool in 2007 at the Olympic stadium in Athens in 2007. UEFA, the body that governs European football, has a coefficient system that ranks the various football associations and ascribes a fixed number of places in the competition based on this rank. - Countries ranked from one to three have 4 places - Countries ranked from four to six have 3 places - Countries ranked from seven to fifteen have 2 places - Countries ranked sixteen or under have 1 place Previous winners include AC Milan 2006/07 FC Barcelona 2005/06 Liverpool FC 2004/05 FC Porto 2003/04 AC Milan 2002/03
